My relationship with Alan began in 2005 when we met in a boxing ring. I had just begun living in Rio and as a keen amateur boxer, I had also become involved with an NGO called Fight for Peace, that was using a methodology involving martial arts, education and personal development to realise the potential in favela communities, of young people just like Alan, who were affected by crime, violence and social exclusion. I would train alongside Alan and the others several times a week and through their warmth and friendship, they quickly became my family in Brazil and the main reason I ended up staying in Rio for 12 years.

Minha relação com o Alan começou em 2005 quando nos conhecemos em um ringue de boxe. Havia acabado de me mudar para o Rio de Janeiro e, como boxeador amador, comecei a me envolver com uma ONG chamada Luta Pela Paz - que utiliza uma metodologia que envolve artes marciais, educação e desenvolvimento pessoal nas favelas, para incentivar o potencial de jovens. Jovens como o Alan, que teve sua vida afetada pelo crime, violência e a exclusão social. Eu treinava ao lado dele e de outras pessoas várias vezes por semana e, por seu carinho e amizade, eles rapidamente se tornaram minha família no Brasil e são a principal razão pela qual estou no Rio há 12 anos.

Although many of his friends and family became victims of the violent drug trade and the other dangers for Rio’s marginalised communities, Alan was a positive and motivated person who had managed to seize the opportunities that the NGO offered to him and he ended up working with them as a boxing coach and as a mentor.
However, when his brother became the ninth close family member to die as a result of the armed conflict, he decided that this wasn’t enough. He decided he needed to do something in the nearby favela community where he was now living. He wanted his son and the young people of the vast favela community of Complexo do Alemão to have the same chances that he had been given. So, in 2015, Alan founded his own project “Abraço Campeão” (Champion Embrace) with some old boxing gloves and punch bags that were due to be thrown away. I was deeply impressed by what he then managed to build with his own time and money and so when Alan asked me to make a small institutional film for him I readily agreed.

Apesar de muitos amigos e familiares do Alan terem se tornado vítimas da violência causada pelo tráfico de drogas, além de outros perigos nas marginalizadas comunidades do Rio, ele sempre foi positivo, motivado e aproveitou as oportunidades oferecidas a ele pela ONG onde começou a trabalhar como treinador de boxe e mentor.
Contudo, quando seu irmão se tornou o nono membro da sua família a morrer, vítima do conflito armado, ele decidiu que isso não era o suficiente e que precisava fazer algo na favela onde morava. Ele queria que seu filho e os jovens da enorme favela do Complexo do Alemão, tivessem as mesmas chances que lhe foram dadas. Em 2015, Alan fundou seu próprio projeto chamado Abraço Campeão com apenas algumas luvas e sacos de boxe que seriam jogados fora. Fiquei profundamente impressionado com o que ele foi capaz de construir utilizando seu tempo e seu próprio dinheiro e quando ele me perguntou se eu poderia produzir um pequeno vídeo institucional para ele, concordei facilmente.

However, I knew that I wanted to make something more ambitious, that would really shine a light on both the problems that face so many in Brazilian favela communities and the important work that Alan was doing. I have made many films for NGOs over the years, but there was something unique and very special in the way that Alan had managed to take an ugly situation and turn it into something so beautiful. I hoped that if I could capture that then Alan might be able to find the support he so badly needed.
I managed to enlist the help of a talented cinematographer called Neirin Jones to help out, but like Alan, we had limited resources and filming in a conflict zone was not always straightforward. We had guns pointed at us and we had to abandon filming due to gun battles on several occasions. But the community, as well as participants on all sides of the armed conflict, were very supportive of our work and there was also always a small army of both children and adults ready to lend a hand and make us feel utterly at home.

Porém, eu queria fazer algo mais ambicioso e que realmente retratasse tanto os problemas que muitas comunidades brasileiras sofrem, como no importante trabalho que estava sendo feito pelo Alan. Fiz vários filmes para ONG’s ao longo dos anos, mas ali tinha algo único e muito especial, pela forma com que ele lidou com uma situação feia e a transformou em algo tão bonito. Tinha a esperança de que se eu conseguisse capturar isso para que ele fosse capaz de conseguir o suporte que tanto precisava.
Consegui contar com a ajuda de um talentoso cineasta chamado Neirin Jones, mas assim como o Alan, nossos recursos também eram limitados e filmar em áreas de conflito armado nem sempre é simples. Tivemos armas apontadas para nós e abandonamos as filmagens em diversas ocasiões. Mas a comunidade, que também sofre de todas as formas com esses conflitos, foi muito solidária com nosso trabalho e sempre havia ali um pequeno grupo de crianças e adultos prontos para nos dar a mão e nos fazer sentir totalmente em casa.

When filming began, Abraço Campeão was just a passion project, like our film. However, after months of filming and many more months of editing we were lucky enough to be accepted to the prestigious Tribeca Film festival. Alan joined us for the festival in New York for a magical week, which was made all the more special when we won “Best Documentary Short”. Riding this wave of enthusiasm we managed to secure meetings in New York and the very first funding for the project.
Since then, more sponsors have helped the journey and thanks to generous donations and the contributions of many volunteers, and talented professionals. the project has grown massively. It now supports over 300 young people each month with a full team, whose work continues to evolve. Sadly, the situation in the community is even more acute than before and their efforts are quite literally life saving. As the project has grown, so has the need for funding, so the mission now is to take the film and the story of “Abraço Campeão” to an ever larger global audience.

Quando começamos as filmagens, o Abraço Campeão era apenas um projeto apaixonante, assim como o filme. Contudo, depois de meses de filmagens e muitos outros de edição, tivemos a sorte de sermos selecionados pelo prestigiado Tribeca Film Festival. Alan nos acompanhou em uma semana mágica em Nova Iorque e que se transformou em algo mais especial quando vencemos a categoria “Best Documentary Short”. Nessa onda de entusiasmo, garantimos encontros e o primeiro investimento para o projeto.
Desde então, mais patrocinadores têm nos ajudado nessa jornada e graças às generosas doações e a contribuição de muitos voluntários e profissionais talentosos, o projeto cresce massivamente. Hoje, mais de 300 jovens recebem suporte mensal de um time completo e o trabalho continua a evoluir. Infelizmente, a situação na comunidade é ainda mais intensa do que antes mas seus esforços têm salvado vidas, literalmente. À medida que o projeto cresce, aumenta também a necessidade de mais financiamento e agora a missão é levar o filme e a história do “Abraço Campeão” à alcançar um público global cada vez maior.
